database design
I have considerable experience both designing and programming databases, especially in MS Access, but also to an extent in Lotus Approach. I offer a freelance / contract database service for any level of databse work: from simple data cleaning through normalisations to restructuring and programming.

My experience from the past 4 years is extensive:
  • April 2001: I redesigned and normalised the mailing database for Young Company Finance Ltd.
  • August 2001: design of a structured database system for Christ's College Music Society Membership list, which included an email mail-merge system to specific groups of members. It also included a music hire library and transaction record system.
  • July-August 2002: I worked as part of a team of two at the Office of Lifelong Learning, the University of Edinburgh, designing the form interface for the Office's computer system. This involved considerable use of Visual Basic modules incorporated into MS Access forms, as well as ensuring multi-user capabilities and reducing the chances of human error being carried into the system.
  • September-October 2002: I assisted as a subconsultant in the redesigning of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society's database system, both in terms of structure and end-user interfaces.
  • September 2003-Present: initially I developed the design interface for the Edinburgh Mathematical Society database system, and have since provided technical support.
My usual rate is £20 per hour, but longer contracts will see a considerable reduction in this fee. If you are interested in having a database developed, then please email databasesrbrignall.org.uk to discuss further options.
