mountaineering photos: Dolomites Expedition 1998
In July 1998, a school expedition drove in a minibus to the Dolomites, Italy. While there, we climbed on vie ferrata, or fixed metal cables.

Here are 18 photographs, typical of what we did during the 10 days we were there. I would have taken a lot more, except that my camera stopped working after the first day, which meant I only had one disposable camera with 36 photos for the rest of the trip. Shame - I'd taken 26 photos on the first day alone!

Please do not reproduce any of these photos without my permission.

Day 1. First close up view of the Dolomites from the gondola.
Day 1. 3 of our group getting to grips with our first Via Ferrata.
Day 1. Hanging glacier, our view at lunchtime.
Day 1. Contemplating the route.
Day 1. View over the clouds.
Day 1. Ridge, along which we walked
(or crawled)...
...and then drop off the end!
Day 1. Sunset view from Rifugio Alimonta.
Here I drop my camera.
Me, sometime on the trip.
No idea when.
Day 5. Brilliant sunset after a day of thunderstorms (rest day, thankfully).
Day 6. Looking down on the rest of the group. Finlay McPherson cheeses for the camera.
Day 6. At the top of the climb. Look for little dots of people still climbing.
Day 6. After descending, it cleared up. That's what we climbed!?
The group, plus Boris (the minibus).
Day 8. A short afternoon Via Ferrata after moving campsites brought our first summit, Col Rosa (2166m).
Day 9. Our last serious day of climbing, here seen half way up, looking down.
Day 9. After climbing through an amphitheatre, the final climb to the summit of Tofana di Rozes (3225m).
