trip report - 1st April 1997

Date:1st April 1997
Mountains:Beinn Fhada (1032m)
Group:Edinburgh Academy Spring Meet (Kintail)
Conditions:Mild, occasional rain showers, but otherwise generally overcast.
The second day of the meet based at Ratagan Youth Hostel started at Innis a Chrotha and followed the path round the north-western slopes of Beinn Fhada into Gleann Choinneachain. We continued to follow the path through occasional rain showers up into the long Allt Coire an Sgairne, where we stopped (briefly) for lunch.

A steep ascent up the end of the coire achieved the final gentle summit slopes, and close to reaching the summit the weather cleared (briefly), giving limited views to the south and east.

The descent went along the fine north-west ridge over Meall an Fhuarain Mhoir - some sections of the ridge being quite narrow and the slopes down to Glen Lichd very steep. From there, we dropped off the end of the ridge and, for once, ended up right next to the minibuses with very little walk-back. Meanwhile, however, I could feel blisters developing in both feet inside the school walking boots I had borrowed for the week. This caused significant pain for the remaining days.
