Robert Brignall has been singing since 1990 with Old St Paul's Church Choir, Edinburgh, where he still sings as a Lay-Clerk. From 2000 to 2003, he sang as a Choral Scholar with Christ's College Chapel Choir, Cambridge, with whom he has made six international tours to Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand and the East and West coasts of the USA. He also sings in Edinburgh with Edinburgh Camerata and Edinburgh Symphony Baroque, and has appeared with the Choir of London. He has studied bass-baritone under Eric von Ibler, James Ottoway and Ghislaine Morgan, and currently studies under Alan Watt.
He has given song recitals with Samuel Hutchings in Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, the Edinburgh Academy, Edinburgh and the Younger Hall, St Andrews, and with Andy Chan in Christ's College Chapel, Cambridge; his song repertoire includes several Schubert Lieder, and Schumann Dichterliebe. As a concert soloist, he has appeared with the Edinburgh University Singers in Faure Requiem in Old Saint Paul's Church, Edinburgh and the Church of St Thomas the Martyr, Newcastle; Edinburgh University Music Society Chorus in Puccini Messa di Gloria; St Michael and All Saints' Choir in Haydn Missa Cellensis; in Handel Messiah, Handel Saul (Saul), Bach St John Passion (Christus), Bach B Minor Mass and Purcell History of Dioclesian (Bacchus) with Edinburgh Symphony Baroque in Canongate Kirk, Edinburgh. On stage he has appeared with the St Andrews University Gilbert and Sullivan Society in The Gondoliers (the Duke of Plaza-Toro), of Ballads, Songs and Snatches (as W.S. Gilbert), and Patience (as Colonel Calverly), and the highly acclaimed production of Handel Xerxes (Ariodates) with Edinburgh Symphony Baroque during the Edinburgh Festival in 2006.
Robert has also directed various orchestras and singers since 1998, notably Mozart Requiem with Christ's Voices in Christ's College Chapel, and with the St Andrews Gilbert and Sullivan Society he was Musical Director for Princess Ida in the Byre Theatre, St Andrews, and Starship Pinafore in the Younger Hall.
